He's expert at synthesizing the source so that a new, unfamiliar reader is not flummoxed. That's a real talent and I've followed him for years.

As a longtime lover and budding writer of crossovers, I can only agree. That certainly takes skill I still need to develop, no question!

He's got a system, I've noticed. The author plunges the reader immediately into the story, and then the next para or maybe the third give the rundown on the canon.

Well, that sounds like quite an effective and reasonable way of solving the canon-knowledge issue.

Yeah, and it's no more than about three sentences, or shorter? It's quite effective and then the story swings back to "real time."

"No exposition dumps" is always good as a goal - but it also can be hard.
