The ~Future of Fandom.

I'm more of a Go With The Flow person, so here's the Kessel Run Challenge on theforce.net that I plan to complete as of April 3rd. That's far enough ahead thinking, IMHO. I'm delighted to read others' entries, though. They is brighter than I. :) We fans can weather any storm with:

In your own space, rec three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

These could be your all-time favorites, fanworks that fit a certain theme, or the last three fanworks you read/viewed/listened to and loved. If you’re looking for a way to make today’s challenge more *coff* interesting, how about rec’ing in small fandoms or rare pairs? A compilation of fanworks that make a great introduction to a fandom?
For the purposes of this challenge, a fanwork is defined as any creative endeavor for a fandom – fic, podfic, art, crafts, vids, meta... If you love it and someone else created it, please share it!

Don’t feel limited (or obligated) to make three recs. One or two is good, and so is a dozen. Just share some fandom love!

I devour rare pairs and small fandoms with fairy sprinkles! Here we go, noting the above italicized official condonement of going overboard. All works are complete unless noted.

Penguins of Madagascar

Training Gone Wrong is a webcomic by supdudes95 on deviantArt depicting stark black and white palettes, except for splotches of color here and there, now and again. NOTE: The link goes to the webcomic as it was completed, which means you must head to the bottom of the page to catch Panel One, and then go on from there. If you start at the top, you'll see the end panel, and I'd not want that. I enjoy this artist because of the fluidity of the poses, the "shine" of a cartoon body rendered superbly, and the expressions of two warrior dudes as they face off in deadly non-earnest.

Skipper Gets Some F****** Therapy by tadstrangerthings, which is a trilogy of fics based on tumblr's drawbauchery's human au here. Skipper forces himself to endure Hans' psychoanalysis of his character. This goes as well as you'd think. General, with warning for Language.

DC

The Pleasures of Civic Duty by [personal profile] gloss This story portrays Golden Age Batman and Robin in all their earnest glory as Robin goes undercover at a gay bar. Sample sentence: "Robin's very musical," Batman noted. Robin looked up at his best pal and grinned. Explicit.

One Good Deed Dying Tongueless by Prochytes. John Constantine crosses over with Hermione Granger, er, no, that doesn't sound quite right. Author's summary: "An unseen war. A teenage fugitive. An ageing mystic with a hangover. John Constantine doesn't know what's going on. It's important that he doesn't find out." Teen.

King Shark Is A Shark by TheDeepGreen. The author fixes the fact that the shark on DC's tv shows is not Nanaue Sha'ark, so this fic repairs the error; guest starring Sarah Lance. Teen.

Marvel

Thin Line by heeroluva. Thor and Loki battle what they consider their damaged, perverse relationship. WIP; at 15862 words, a decent wordcount to recommend. Explicit.

Lying in the Bed We Made by CourtneyCourtney, in which all-too-human Agent Carter and Jarvis fall prey to Howard Stark's talent in chemistry. Explicit.

Acquiring a Frame of Reference by [personal profile] jedibuttercup, who wrote this delightful tale for me of Thor and Darcy attending a fan convention, and what they do when they get there. General audiences.

Star Wars

Knights Out by Temple_Mistress, whose crack!fic portraying not-so-staid Jedi as they go clubbing I reread every now and again. Prequel era, multiple characters such as Quinlan Vos, Siri Tachi and others letting their robes fly open to, erm, let in some fresh air. 68349 words, complete in 7 chapters except for the epilogue in ch. 8 which we await patiently. Explicit.

A Thousand Dreams or More, But Only One Reality by
Queen of the Castle (queen_of_the_castle_77) with the intriguing pairing of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ferus Olin from the YA series Jedi Quest, Last of the Jedi, and Rebel Force. Ferus later drew the assignment of guarding young Leia on Alderaan. It is just as much fun as it sounds. Teen.

A Trip Down Mammary Lane by BrotherFromAnotherMother and ThePartyPrince, whose title alone brings out the LOLs. Set during the Clone Wars and based on the Filoni series episode, "Trespass." Anakin makes sure that Obi-Wan realizes how annoying a certain habit is. Mature.

And finally, the amazing vid called Midichlorian Rhapsody by mysticfig.

Set a goal.

I made a backyard bower some years ago. Here's a photo of Willow perched on the toprail of the west-facing fence; I'm sitting on the old daybed used for writing, napping and daydreaming. Well, our recent storms smashed it flat! So the goal is to rebuild it for 2023.

You can see the transverse roof supports. They snagged a lot of rain which bowed and eventually broke the structure, so the plan is to hang perpendicular supports from the bower's toprail to sluice the rain downwards. Wish me luck!

Title: Auction Angst

Author: pronker

Era: 15 BBY

Summary: Luke and Beru share an ~Adventure.

IOIOIOIOIO

Blanking your mind makes the Troig's two heads easier to understand, but you are not alone this Mos Eisley morning.

"Aunt Beru, what are dey saying?"

"Let me concentrate, Luke, and then I'll tell you. Go play in the plasteel slag heap with the others, be a good boy, go. Aunt Beru needs to think."

"'Kay."

Plasteel slag produces perfectly smooth, round balls half the size of your pinkie fingernail so nothing scratches and oh look, he's playing with other children. He'll like that. Fours need to socialize because when he's five, he'll start school. You frown as you push away a pang. Let the future take care of itself and drat, you've lost track of the auction so a perfectly contoured bantha got sold and you don't know how much it went for. Get back in the game, Beru.

You remain unsure if you have the money to buy a bantha, and then there will be fodder, shelter and vet bills because you remember your childhood pets quite well. None of them were bantha-sized, though. None of them qualified as possible second vehicles if the family speeder breaks down.

You follow the auction and when it's over, you sit alone on the bleachers. The Troig nods both heads in your direction before joining the throng of buyers as they chitter about their purchases before leaving in twos and threes for the pens to lead their new stock away. A bantha seems impossible to afford, keep, and, well, groom. All that shedding hair! You could weave it into blankets, you suppose, but you've got enough chores. No, Owen will agree with your decision when you three meet for lunch.

You're stiff from sitting so long on the backless seat so you swing your arms and work your shoulders. "Luke?"

The children leave in twos and threes, as well.

"Lu-uke!"

You smile as you stretch and stand up. From the topmost bleacher, you survey the area. The transports parked haphazardly shimmer as the breeze picks up, not yet boiling hot but it will be. No Luke. You climb onto the seat. He's wandered off with Camie's family, yes that is it. You spot them near their rattletrap transport; they've foregone buying, like you. You count them as they cram themselves into the passenger cab, one two three four five six.

This can't be happening. One moment here, the other gone.

"Luke! Luke!"

Departing transports growl, banthas bawl, and you jump down from the modest height. You run to the slag heap. You kick it because surely, surely he's let the others bury him for fun. You'll come across his dear little form any second now. The heap flattens to a wide expanse of rolling balls one ball deep. You trot upon it, skittering, flailing for balance, hoping he's somewhere safe. You have not known the true meaning of fear before this.

Where to now? The bantha pens! The massive banthas in their massive pens could hide, or crush, such a small, innocent pateesa. The thirty meters to the pens seems like thirty parsecs, and what can those Aqualish be doing clustered around one pen? They shove each other to peer through the rails at something. No. No. Not an accident, he's so young.

What was it Owen said? "Aqualish run a few rackets now in the Workers Section and they'll grow meaner as they grow bigger. Keep away from them, Beru. They're bad news."

You hesitate before pushing through to see the spectacle. You climb as you have not since girlhood to gain the top rail, and you gasp.

At your eye level, Luke sits atop a bantha. He's absorbed with holding onto his perch with one hand. What is that he's doing with his other one? It does not matter because you have found him.

Relief blazes through you as you wonder what to do next. You do not know much about banthas. How excitable are they? They are huge! If you jump across, you will startle it. And how can you jump back onto the rail, or down into the pen beside the pillars of legs, holding Luke? The Aqualish rumble, the bantha chews placidly, and Luke is in danger.

You must act.

IOIOIOIO

"Mmmm, this is one tasty nerfburger. So, Beru, what do you think about getting a bantha?"

"I think there is such a thing as too much fun. Luke, finish your milk."

"Lukie, wouldn't you like a bantha to tame?"

"Nah."

"Don't encourage him, Uncle Owen. Luke, take this wupiupi to the music droid and choose a song to play. Go now."

"'Kay."

"So what happened you're not telling me?"

"Luke rode a bantha --- here's a napkin let me pound your back --- and I'm sure he used the Force to calm it."

You sip your boba.

IOIOIOIOIO

A/N: Livestock auctions provided grand fun when I was small, and the auctioneers' patter remains a fond memory. Cattle, sheep, and hogs paraded before the bleachers, bids flashed quickly, and children cried as their two-year project animals trotted to their destiny all unknowing. Here's a song about it by Leroy Van Dyke:

Celebrate a win in 2022.

I dipped a toe into both a new writing format and a new fandom, Hogan's Heroes. Thanks to a challenge on theforce.net, I wrote a tanka to provide a finale for a fondly remembered show. Poetry came hard and this tanka ate my brain for about two weeks. Vielmouse made my day with my nicest review in twenty twenty-two.

Series finales proved rare in this TV era, let me tell you; in fact, I'd need to think hard about any show that had one because the emphasis on renewal made showrunners wear blinders, I guess. Falling ratings destroyed the very idea of finales getting produced to make the fans, well, not happy, but maybe fulfilled? Allow Sergeant Saunders and Lt. Hanley to at least fight their way into Germany!

In your own space, tell us about 3 creative/fannish resources, spaces, or communities you use or enjoy. (One or two is fine, especially if you're in a smaller fandom)

T.A.C.T.I.C.S. on the force.net expounds upon improving combat scenes, particularly involving lightsabers. With tweaking, this can be any form of combat when you want to hit someone and hit 'em hard. It's closed to further entries, with a respectable amount of helpful hints. Generally, my muse delivers on action scenes and this site serves to embellish them, strategize big battles or small, and delve into ~feelings when one is embattled. This resource is for the big fat fandom, Star Wars, and the next one is for the cozier fandom, Penguins of Madagascar.

The Penguins of Madagascar Wiki answers 99.9 per cent of questions regarding VAs, plots, quotes and a fair number of transcriptions of episodes so you can understand what that rapid dialogue entailed. Rico imma looking at you

I enjoy visiting the Omaha Country Club Weatherbug camera site because quite some time ago, I contemplated moving to Nebraska: the city of Alliance in its western part, the Sandhills. I traveled through it many times and picked Alliance as a dream vacation to scope it out for living quality. Sociologist Cousin cautioned "watch for the population figures, because you may believe you're heading for a 25,000 population center such as Norfolk, but those numbers include the rural residents." I've since settled for using Weatherbug to visit places because my traveling days are behind me. :)

In your own space, add something to your fandom's canon.

In the Penguins of Madagascar TV show canon, former team members Manfredi and Johnson receive the dubious honor of being Negative Examples in Skipper's teaching. He really drubs their ghastly fates into his team's heads: "Don't do what Manfredi and Johnson did! You'll [pick one] a. be mailed home in a Manila envelope ... from Manila, ironically; b. escape from a beluga whale's gut by the business end and speak only gibberish afterwards; or c. be killed by flying piranhas in Ecuador!" I publish today an alternative fate, still dramatic, but without the, you know, eyes gouged out or limbs ripped off.

Get it all out. Scream into the void.

Ahhhhheeeeoooorrrrrooooohhhhohireallyshouldstart. typing. *ahem*

I've had a few disappointments and weird things happen, it's true. I was involved with a letterzine eons ago that had bizarre feuds-by-snail-mail which involved arguments three months apart due to the mailing schedule. I wasn't one of the feuders but it sucked to read erudite LOCs that said basically, "You stink." And then there was the time in that same fandom that a fan mailed letters quite often just to me off the list, with politically interesting content; he was Canadian and after a few months of my non-political replies pointing out that what we had in common was the fandom, he wrote me a Dear Jill letter saying, sadly, that I would 'join the file of his other correspondents who started well and disappointed him.' Later I discovered that he lived with his family in a remote part of Ontario, was disabled, and that fandom filled his days with both joy and despair. Well, shit. I felt bad that I had a family to help support complete with babeez and I couldn't be all things to all people, I guess. I simply didn't desire to delve into American politics to provide 'content' to him to keep up our correspondence. He drew nice 'illos' for the letterzine. :/

Another time, in an online RPG group in another fandom, three LJ friends played great guns for years and then a big fat fight broke out with mass defriendings and growing crankiness. That sucked for us watchers, and particularly for one watcher who formed a community just to comment on the RPG. Bleurgh.

Hee, refurbishing my imported-from-LJ journal has shown me that introspection is not my long suit because slinking back to 2007 hurt my head.

In conclusion, here's a pet peeve about fanartists: Stick to one name! I just begin to follow someone, cheer on their developing talent and blammo, they succumb to fandom drift. I do not mind, but then they change their name so I can't stalk them anymore, er, I didn't mean that, you know. Artists, perhaps it's not you, it's me because the artistic temperament strains my understanding.

PS Authors, finish those WIPs! Gosh! Don't you know that this online writing is work and you're supposed to finish it? Forget about fun until you hit 'complete' on the story. Don't make me transfuse you with my Type O+ Danish-American work ethic! *removes tongue from cheek*

Fandom manifesto - explain why people should join your fandom, where to find the media, some recs to get people started.

Oh boy, foisting explaining! Here goes:

My main fandom is Penguins of Madagascar animated series on Nickelodeon/Nicktoon, the spinoff from the Madagascar movie series that began in 2005. If you enjoy Dreamworks' masterful animation style, this show is for you. The writers enjoy playing with zoo animals' varying sizes, which must have challenged the animators and writers - for instance, how to enable a 1-foot tall *or thereabouts, the penguins' species is, um, unspecified* penguin to immobilize a 2-ton menacing elephant in the name of duty. Amazing fanart continues to pour forth from Korea, Japan and Russia in the main.

Now, it's a small, cozy fandom with 749 stories on AO3 and 3.1K tales on fanfiction.net. I like this; I'm good with cozy. Fanart (both original and humanized versions) abounds on pixiv, a Japanese site and 16.9K fanarts on deviantArt. Then there's tumblr and twitter ...

The characters skirt the realm of surreal cartoon action, and then dive right in. Humans such as Zookeeper Alice mistrust the chaos surrounding her charges, while the dolphin Villain, Dr. Blowhole, schemes to control the world, beginning with its oceans, so you can see there's a crying need for an elite team of commando penguins to save us all ... and make us laugh, too. Here are some recs for authors:

NPI on fanfiction.net crafts unique tales in the Penguins of Madagascar universe. Currently, Inverse Alchemy sources Dire Straits' famous album from 1978 to write stories based on each of its songs. I'm stunned at the creativity explored in each anthologized fic, as the author states, "unrelated, random and even contradictory" one-shots.

Priorities by Snark-N-Moon explores the popular Kowalski/Rico pairing along with the Skilene (Skipper/Marlene) match up. It's an adventurous romance/humor story that utilizes the main characters along with the supporting characters in the zoo.

TVTropes recs

Fanart:

Just-Pauline on tumblr for fine drawings and

a stupendous year-long art blog for 2022 called 1morteveryday by the-bus-called-graveyard-8. Just completed, adorable mouse lemur Mort receives a starring role.

In conclusion, I hope you stop on by the fandom for short or for long. There's even a movie, Penguins of Madagascar (notice the omitted 'The') featuring globe-spanning action, marvelous animation and a memorable Bavarian rump-slapping dance, the Schuhplattler as performed by penguins. Yes.

Hello, folks. I am a retired copywriter; if you have the ambition to write fanfiction, try a short 'missing moment' scene, such as Obi-Wan Kenobi's reaction when Qui-Gon Jinn describes him offhandedly as "capable."

Author has written 106 stories for Star Wars, Odyssey, Hogan's Heroes, Edgar Allan Poe, Shakespeare, Penguins of Madagascar, Greek Mythology, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Justice League, and Little Women.

The above blurb from fanfiction.net shows fandoms in which I've written, and here are a few *@@* more fandoms providing glorious reads to brighten my days: Marvel Agents of SHIELD, Batman, Agent Carter, Jurassic Park, Wild Wild West, Laredo, Rat Patrol, Combat!, Sherlock Holmes, Sgt. Fury, Thor, Phantom Stranger, Aquaman, Mr. Sunshine, and Constantine.

There is pronkerblog at wordpress containing my completed long fic "Undertow" with a spiffy graphic; this story is also on fanfiction.net and Archive Of Our Own; ~~~~~~ !*!*!*!*!* PLEASE NOTE M RATING. !*!*!*!*!* ~~~~~~

If you are into fanart, tumblr has stunning POM (and other fandoms!) cartoons offered by drawbauchery, and if you browse through the archive of humanized POM works via the pom tag, it's a trove of fannish goodness. Also, there is superb regular and humanized POM art by tumblr's tgoru. :) *siiiigh* Pixiv, tumblr and twitter make me yearn to read Russian, Japanese and Korean soooo much.

Why is this POM fandom such darn fun? (written for Snowflake's challenge of some years ago)

"Dear Small Fandom,

I love you. I treasure each review, like, kudos, heart and lurking view! You are precious to me and your creativity astounds, particularly the fanart. Nuances abound in both humanized and original POM format across the web. Keep it up! Your small scope makes me happy in large doses. Also good is tumblr's incorrectpomquotes that introduced me to the concept of incorrect quotes in many fandoms.

Love,

pronker"

This is what made me laugh hardest about the Penguins of Madagascar fandom, because it encapsulates all the relationships between the main characters. From Madagascar 2:

Skipper: Operation Tourist Trap is a go.

Private: Oh, I like that one!

Kowalski: Works on many levels, sir.

Skipper: You guys are a bunch of suckups!

Kowalski: That too, sir!

Private: Absolutely!

Rico: Aye!

In a similar vein, the tumblr of incorrectpomquotes offers this:

Skipper: You don't need perfect people to make a perfect team. You need people whose flaws feed into each other. It's, uh - what do you call it - umm ...

Kowalski: Codependence.

Skipper: Synergy. For instance, there might be something Rico hates doing but Private loves doing. Or there might be something that Private hates doing but he does it anyways because what he really loves is to feel useful.

Kowalski: You literally just defined "codependence."

Skipper: *clink* Here's to synergy.
