Tonight was much better because just after dark at 6 p.m. came more fireworks. The neighborhood has many residents of Asian cultures and often we hear fireworks and gunshots, the gunshots in particular occurring on Jan. 1. Last year, my bank's free calendar showed numerous Chinese holidays and it helped to at least recognize the days/nights when we'd hear fireworks.
We don't have very many Asian residents; what we have is Polish immigrants. This is the second influx of Poles the UK has had in my lifetime - the other being in the mid-forties, just after WW2. A lot of Poles served in the British army and stayed here after the war. There's even a section in our local supermarket (and it's a small town) devoted to Polish food (tins and packets).
