Snowflake Challenge #5

pronkerTalk about what has improved in your life thanks to fandom.
I've thought about this off and on all day.
First: the camaraderie. There's nothing like squeeing over the latest TV ep or latest webcomic installment online; I omit pre-internet days, for me pre-2005. For offline chatting, my Nephew and my Youngest share my interests. Life is pretty darn sweet fannishly.
Next, post-2005, I used online sociability to write fic for festivals in order to gain practice copywriting for an online copy mill to make my living. With ficcage, there're small consequences for missing a deadline, not so in real life. Fandom introduced joy in creating plots, delving into characterization and learning WordPad. Yes, for 17 years I used humble WordPad both fannishly and for profit! Windows no longer offers WordPad *glares* but WordPal is about the same. Since retirement, I've not written a heckuva lot. Lately I'm simply sopping up all the glorious fics I'd not had time to read when I was working. *preens*
After braving conversations with creators, it is such darn fun to see them develop as artists or writers, I can't even. Years pass and their talent blossoms so it's a privilege to witness such growth. Oh they may change their screen names, so I muststalk fave, follow, reblog, or retweet with difficulty, but it's worth the effort.
A sidenote is that I discovered the meta aspect of fandom, first with FoxMarie's slash survey and its publication on her LiveJournal here, where she is ijedi7 with more thinky thoughts here and here. As one of 304 participants, I put words to feels, which was enlightening.
In conclusion, fandom makes me feel rich.
